3 of the team boats gun their engines at daybreak on day 2 of the tournament at Ponta Delgada.

Last week I was delighted to be back in Ponta Delgada on beautiful Sao Miguel island in the Azores for the Azores Airlines 2016 Big Game Fishing Tournament, my second time there - the first being in 2014 when we had high seas all 3 fishing days and only a couple of big tuna. This time the seas were kinder and we did find a few billfish, dorado and a wahoo between the teams.

As usual there was a photograph competition amongst the members of the invited press, voted on by the local dignitaries and I was very pleased to be named the winner once more with my shot above of boats at the start line at daybreak. This was taken from the flybridge of Shanghai, the boat I was allocated to for the fishing days.

At the closing ceremony on the last night I was presented with a commemorative plate to add to my collection of souvenirs. I will be publishing a fuller blog of my visit in due course so watch this space!

How to visit the Azores

The islands of the Azores are a fantastic place to visit and I can't recommend them highly enough. Check into flights with Azores Airlines and we stayed at the very nice Azor Hotel right above the marina with views over the boats and out to sea - fantastic location, food and service.
